Courses for Teachers and Professionals

Recognising and Helping Children with Motor Learning Difficulties (Dyspraxia)
(Previously called ‘Dyspraxia for Teachers’)

Date of Next Course: Tuesday 18 November 2008

Location: Oasis Room, St James' Church, Clitheroe, Lancashire

Course Tutor: Julia Dyer MCSP BSc (Hons), Clinical Specialist in Developmental Coordination Disorder, Advanced Sensory Integration Practitioner

Introduction:

Research has shown that between 6 - 10 % of the population have problems with motor coordination skills, on average 1 or 2 children in each primary school class.  Many of these children's problems remain unrecognised, it is a 'hidden handicap' which can lead to severe educational and social problems for the child.  Many teachers do not feel that they have the skills to recognise and help these children in school.

Aims:

The aim of this one day course is to provide primary school staff with an understanding of motor learning difficulties (including Dyspraxia and Developmental Coordination Disorder) and the everyday difficulties the children experience. Practical support strategies will be explored from both an educational and therapy perspective.

Audience:

This course is suitable for SENCOs, class teachers and staff supporting children with motor learning difficulties in primary schools.
The course is also suitable for health care professionals working with children with motor learning difficulties (eg physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech and language therapists, school nurses, nursery nurses, psychologists)
