Sensory Strategies for Children with Sensory Processing Disorder (Sensory Course 2)

Date of Next Course: 27 November 2012

Location: Oasis Room, St James' Church, Clitheroe, Lancashire BB7 1HH

Course Tutor: Julia Dyer MCSP BSc (Hons), Independent Children's Physiotherapist,  Advanced Sensory Integration Practitioner

Introduction:

Sensory processing disorder is increasingly being recognised as a significant factor for children in terms of their behaviour and ability to learn.  This can be a problem not only for children who have a medical diagnosis or who are within special education but also for children in mainstream schools. Sensory processing problems can lead to children appearing to be disruptive, distressed or unable to focus in class.    In order to address these children's particular needs, an understanding of sensory integration principles is essential in order to develop and implement appropriate strategies for the child within their particular school environment and home.  Applying appropriate strategies can make a significant difference to a child's wellbeing, behaviour and ability to learn.

Aims:

The aim of this one day course is to enable teachers and health professionals who have attended the introductory course to extend their knowledge on sensory integration and sensory processing disorder.  The major focus of this course will be to give participants the understanding and skills necessary to identify and analyse sensory behaviours, and then to set up appropriate sensory strategies within home and school.

Audience:

This course is suitable for people who have attended an introductory day in sensory processing disorder and would like to build upon the knowledge gained in the course 'Introduction to Sensory Integration and Sensory Processing Disorder', and develop further skills in formulating practical sensory strategies.

This course is suitable for SENCOs, class teachers and staff supporting children with sensory processing problems in schools.

The course is suitable for health care professionals working with children with sensory processing disorder (eg physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech and language therapists, school nurses, nursery nurses, psychologists).

Outcomes of the course:
